Journalists from 34 nations adopted a resolution pledging to protest and publicize abuses of press freedom worldwide, including sending a mission to South Africa. The three-day meeting in London, titled “Challenging the Censors,” was described as the first international conference held specifically to combat censorship. It was called by the World Press Freedom Committee and other press organizations. The journalists adopted a resolution calling on all governments to allow print and broadcast journalists to operate freely and to end press curbs.
