Angels’ Patrol Heeds Police Bid to End Warnings

A campaign by the Guardian Angels to warn Koreatown transients of a killer or killers who have slain four people was abandoned minutes after it began Monday.

About 20 members of the Los Angeles Guardian Angels gathered at Vermont Avenue and Olympic Boulevard and started to distribute flyers that read, “BEWARE TRANSIENT KILLERS: If we see you commit the crime, we guarantee you will do the time.”

But before they had a chance to spread out, police arrived and asked the self-appointed community patrol not to expand their activities in the area.

“I’m assuming they had some sort of undercover operation in place,” said Angels coordinator Scott McKeown. Police were not immediately available for comment.

McKeown said the Angels would move on to the Skid Row area. The Angels intended to warn transients to stay in large groups, stuff thick newspapers under their clothing as protection in a knife attack and call 911 if they feel anyone is in danger.

Detectives arrested one person Thursday for the killing of a 55-year-old transient but believe still others are responsible for the stabbing deaths of three other transients near Koreatown.
