Defense Department employees made $4.5-million worth of illegal long distance telephone calls on official government lines during the first quarter of fiscal 1985, an audit said. Another $325,000 worth of unofficial telephone calls were made from Defense Department phones in the Washington, D.C., area during January and February, 1985, the 37-page audit by the Pentagon inspector general said. The Oct. 8 audit focused on nationwide long distance calls over the Federal Telecommunications System, a network for interagency government use.
