Japanese chip sellers are leading the industry.

Dataquest, a San Jose market research firm, said its survey of 1986 semiconductor sales showed that for the first time ever, no U.S. firms ranked among the three biggest in the industry. NEC retains the No. 1 position. Hitachi and Toshiba won the second and third spots from Motorola and Texas Instruments, respectively, which moved into fourth and fifth positions. The rankings, measured in U.S. dollars of revenue, were affected by the dollar’s decline against the yen.
