Orange Coast College has been given a $385,000 grand-prix racing sailboat.

Called the Shadow, the 56-foot sloop was donated to the community college by Richard Rogers of Los Angeles. It is being berthed in Orange Coast’s Sailing and Rowing Base off Coast Highway in Newport Beach.

The Shadow, a well-known competitor in ocean races, has been in Hawaii’s Clipper Cup, San Francisco’s Big Boat Series and the 1985 Trans-Pacific Yacht Race.

The Orange Coast sailing team will compete with the Shadow in February in a Long Beach collegiate event. The boat also will be used in classes sponsored by the college’s sailing academy.

“We’re extremely honored to receive a boat of Shadow’s caliber,” said Brad Avery, director of the college’s sailing program. “The boat’s racing record and management have been first class. We’re honored that Mr. Rogers thought enough of our program to give us this kind of support.”
