A Frenchwoman treated for sterility for 10 years gave birth Thursday to two girls and two boys in this northwestern town after being made pregnant through in-vitro fertilization, hospital officials said.

The mother, Michele Denommey, 34, had insisted on keeping them all, although doctors had suggested removing two embryos to simplify the pregnancy.

The four babies, called Axelle, Alicia, Benjamin and Romain, were the first test-tube quadruplets to be born in France. They weighed between four and five pounds at birth.

The sources said both mother and babies were in good health.
