Janice Eckles, a five-year member of the Torrance 4-H Club, is the state 4-H winner in public speaking. A junior at Notre Dame Academy, Eckles was awarded a trip to the national 4-H Congress last month in Chicago. Her projects were rabbits, photography, leadership, citizenship and public speaking.

Edward G. Arevalo of Wilmington and Jennifer L. Decker of Richmond, Va., have announced their engagement. Decker, a communications coordinator at the Virginia Eye Institute, and Arevalo, a medical student at the University of Nebraska, will be married June 20 in Richmond.

Mr. and Mrs. Roger P. Bozzone of Manhattan Beach have announced the engagement of their daughter, Cynthia Robin, to Jeffrey Jennings Leist, son of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Leist of Woodland Hills. Bozzone, who works for Hughes Aircraft Co. in El Segundo, and Leist, a lawyer with Lytle, Richard and Granieri in Pasadena, will marry in March and live in Manhattan Beach.

Andrea Harris has been named principal of Leuzinger High School by Centinela Valley Union High School trustees. Harris, an assistant principal at Buena Park High, succeeds Ronald Tyler, who has become district director of computer services.

The Palos Verdes Arts Assn. has elected Mike Friedman to a one-year term as president. Friedman served for three years as treasurer.

James Barber has been named administrator of Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Inglewood. Barber had been executive vice president and chief operating officer of Queen of the Valley Hospital, West Covina.

Also at Daniel Freeman, Coro Yuja has been named president of the auxiliary, which holds fund-raisers and gives volunteer help to the hospital.

Jim Slayden has been appointed chairman of the Carson-Lomita-Torrance Private Industry Council. Slayden, former general manager of Bullock’s at Del Amo, will be responsible for overall operation of the nonprofit employment placement service.

Kaiser Permente Medical Center in Harbor City has honored Roseanne Horta of San Pedro for 14,300 hours of volunteer service. Horta has worked there for eight years and is president of the Volunteer Board.
