U.S. marshals in California arrested a fugitive Argentine general accused of supervising the kidnaping, torture and murder of suspected leftists in Argentina in the late 1970s. U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Steve Boyle said Carlos Guillermo Suarez Mason, 63, former head of Argentina’s 1st Army Corps, was arrested near San Francisco by deputy marshals who traced telephone calls from the home of Suarez Mason’s son in New York City. Argentina, which issued a warrant for Suarez Mason’s arrest in 1984, has accused him of false imprisonment and of torturing prisoners as a senior member of the military government that ruled Argentina from 1976-83.
