Kinetic-Light Sculpture on View in San Diego

“Southern Lights,” the first permanent kinetic-light sculpture in the nation, is operating every weekday evening at Oliver McMillan’s California First Bank building at La Jolla Centre in San Diego.

The laser-light sculpture creates bluish-green geometric linear and angular shapes on and around the 160-foot tall building at 4660 La Jolla Village Drive. It was designed to comply with all federal, state and local safety regulations.

The $250,000 sculpture is on from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and was designed by Santa Monica-based artist Steven V. Correia to create “an interaction of glass, light and their reflections.” So far, the only dissenting voice has been that of San Diego Tribune editor Neil Morgan, who called the sculpture “sky pollution” in a column.
