PITTSBURGH —
An accidental pre-dawn fire in a tunnel at Western Penitentiary today triggered a rampage by inmates who clashed with guards, fought one another and set other fires. Officials said at least 28 men were injured.
The disturbance lasted more than eight hours before authorities declared the 105-year-old prison secure. Two guards and a prisoner were hospitalized for head and facial injuries and 23 inmates, a guard and a firefighter were treated at the prison for cuts and bruises or smoke inhalation, officials said.
