Four U.S. senators who have jointly sponsored arms control measures for several years introduced legislation designed to prevent the Reagan Administration from any further deployment of nuclear weapons exceeding sub-limits set by the unratified strategic arms limitation treaty. The Senate bill would prohibit money appropriated by Congress from being spent to deploy or operate any launcher in excess of specific sub-limits in the agreement. The bill was introduced by Sen. John H. Chafee (R-R.I.), a former secretary of the Navy, and Sens. Dale Bumpers (D-Ark.), Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) and John Heinz (R-Pa.).
