All but two of Oxford University’s mutinous boat race crew drifted back into line after threatening to quit the prestigious rowing race over a team selection squabble.

The American-led first-team revolt over the dropping of teammate Chris Clark, of Newport Beach, led to one of the biggest controversies in the 158-year history of the race along the River Thames.

Club president Donald McDonald had threatened to hand Oxford’s challenge over to reserve crew, Isis, if the first-choice eight failed to put their names forward by a midnight deadline.

Soon after the deadline passed, McDonald said that all except two --Americans oarsmen Chris Huntington of New York and Chris Penny from Middletown, Rhode Island--had contacted him to say their protest was over.
