Micropolis, one of the computer industry’s fastest growing disk-drive makers, said its earnings rose 129%, to $5.1 million, or 46 cents a share, in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 27. For the year, earnings were up 557%, to $18.3 million, or $1.72 a share.

The Chatsworth-based company said its sales rose 43%, to $51.8 million, in the quarter and increased 118% for the year, to $213.1 million.

Micropolis has grown rapidly by specializing in making fast, high-capacity disk drives used by computers to store and retrieve data. Micropolis has also benefited because one of its customers is Digital Equipment Corp., based in Maynard, Mass., one of the country’s largest computer makers.
