Deukmejian Cuts for the Gifted

Share

Deukmejian has proposed that California phase out our gifted and talented public education program. This program nurtures critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity, the very skills we depend upon for conceptual and technological breakthroughs.

In 1981, President Reagan in a similar budget cut, phased out the federal Office for Gifted and Talented Education. It would seem that our governor has joined President Reagan in this shortsighted policy of educational neglect.

During Deukmejian’s recent trip to Japan, he noted that the education system there is regarded as excellent. We would be naive to believe that other nations expect their students with high academic and creative potential to “make it on their own.”

The nominal savings accrued by curtailing this program would be penny-wise and pound-foolish. California’s investment in sound educational programs will be returned many times, not only in eventual taxable income and revenue but also in contributions that benefit society as a whole.

If we Californians allow our elected executive officer to pursue this disastrous budgetary action, then we are endorsing a policy that threatens both our technological and economic future. The Legislature and Deukmejian must restore money for the gifted and talented program and must sign into law a mandate that guarantees funding for California’s commitment to public education of bright young people regardless of race or socio-economic status.
