U.S. Figure Skating : Roca, Adair Take Lead in Ice Dancing

Defending champions Renee Roca from Rochester, N.Y., and Donald Adair of Woodhaven, Conn., were in first place through two of the three compulsory dances in the ice dancing competition Tuesday night at the U.S. Figure Skating championships.

Suzanne Semanick of Bridgeville, Pa. and Scott Gregory of Skaneateles, N.Y., runners-up in 1986, tied the leaders and Adair in the polka phase of the competition, but Roca and Adair had an edge in the waltz.

The rumba was scheduled for later Tuesday night in the Tacoma Dome.

The dance competitions continues Thursday with the original set pattern. The finals are scheduled for Friday night.

The first- and second-place teams advance to the world championships next month in Cincinnati.

Debi Thomas begins defense today of her ladies championship with the compulsory figures. The men’s compulsory figures are scheduled for Thursday morning. Brian Boitano is the defending champion.

Thomas and Boitano also won world championships last year.
