Bell : Pollution Delays Escrow
Escrow on the sale of an 8.6-acre parcel by the City of Bell to developer Trammell Crow Co. was extended by the City Council last week after soil contamination was discovered on the site.
David Meyer, director of community development, said the contamination is minor and stems from an old 2,000-gallon diesel fuel tank that was on the site. The site formerly contained an armory for the National Guard. He said it may cost from $50,000 to $70,000 to remedy the contamination.
The council approved an agreement in September with the Dallas-based company to develop the property on Bandini Boulevard between Atlantic and Eastern avenues. The company will pay the city $2.7 million for the land and construct an office building and two warehouses.
Meyer said company officials asked the city “to renegotiate a portion” of the agreement that would call for the city to pay for part or all the cost of removal of the contaminated soil. A public hearing is set for Feb. 17.
