Irish nationalist guerrillas said they have attempted to kill Britain’s secretary for Northern Ireland, Tom King. A police spokesman in Belfast said the claim could not be substantiated. The previously unknown Irish National Freedom Fighters said that one of its gunmen tried to shoot and kill King while he was aboard a naval patrol boat during a visit to British marines at Carlingford Lough, near the border with the Irish Republic. The group is believed to be another splinter faction of the feud-torn Irish National Liberation Army, which is seeking to end British rule in Northern Ireland.
