Hundreds of demonstrators, bolstered by several House Democrats and celebrities, protested at the desert Nevada Test Site today against the resumption of U.S. nuclear testing, and several protesters were arrested.

Guards and Nye County sheriff’s deputies immediately took into custody several demonstrators in a Greenpeace hot-air balloon when it landed near the main gate, just inside the grounds of the classified government research compound. Astronomer-author Carl Sagan, singer-actor Kris Kristofferson, former Atty. Gen. Ramsey Clark, actor Martin Sheen and half a dozen House Democrats were among those at the site.
