The U.S. aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy, sent to the eastern Mediterranean after a spate of hostage-taking in Lebanon, anchored today for an unscheduled call at this northern Israeli port.

An officer coming ashore said sailors had been ordered to remain inside city limits and call their shore station every few hours. Rear Adm. Grant A. Sharp, commander of the Kennedy’s battle group, said the carrier will remain in Haifa for up to five days. He declined to answer other questions.
