East Germany’s Karin Kania overcame chilling winds at Milwaukee and a strong challenge from teammate Andrea Ehrig to win her second straight world speed skating championship.
Kania won the 1,500 meters in 2:08.9, beating Ehrig by nearly two seconds. She then finished second to Ehrig in the 5,000 to edge Ehrig for the overall title.
Kania finished with 176.721 points to 177.358 for Ehrig in the two-day, four-event World Speed Skating Championships for women at the Wisconsin Olympic Ice Rink.
