The school board also voted unanimously Tuesday to oppose a city zoning change that would make it more difficult to sell church, school, museum and other institutional sites to private developers.

The proposal, to come before the City Council March 9, could delay such sales as much as a year while community residents attempted to come up with another institutional use for the site.

Proponents of the zoning change say such sales can result in substantial change in their neighborhoods, depending on subsequent development. The school board said such new zoning could lower the value of school district property and delay needed sales of surplus property.

The board prefers instead a proposed separate agreement with the city to give community areas a shorter period of time to consider using an assessment district to buy land that otherwise would be sold to developers.
