Local News in Brief : Father, 2 Sons Rescued From Lake Castaic

A Newhall man and his two young sons were rescued from Lake Castaic after their motorboat caught fire, the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department reported Tuesday.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon as the boat was about 1,000 yards from shore, lake lifeguard Brian Roney said. Lifeguards spotted a large plume of smoke about 4:30 p.m., and, as they headed toward the 18-foot boat, Roney said, they saw the man and two children jump into the 51-degree water.

The lifeguards pulled Lynn Whitaker and his sons Mike, 9, and Shawn, 2, from the water and extinguished the boat fire with help from a Los Angeles County fire engine, which doused the still-smoldering boat after it was towed ashore, Roney said.

The fire, which caused about $2,000 damage to the boat, was caused by a fuel leak, Roney said.
