Naming of Year-Round Schools Delayed Until Spring

The announcement of which Los Angeles district schools will convert to a year-round schedule in 1988 may be delayed for several months, officials said Thursday.

Los Angeles Board of Education members had promised to publish by last month a list of schools slated for year-round schedules. The announcement was postponed until late this month, however, and now school officials say the list will not be released until sometime this spring because of a delay in completing a demographic study on expected growth patterns in the district.

Supt. Harry Handler, recommended an early announcement of schools targeted for year-round operation to give faculty members time to revise their schools’ curriculum and parents time to adjust vacation schedules.

“The study is the key to future decisions,” district spokesman Bill Rivera said, adding that the demographic report, which is being prepared for the district by an outside consultant, should be ready sometime in March.

School officials hope that, by operating schools year-round, dividing students into several groups and alternating vacation periods, schools can accommodate more students during a time of fast-growing enrollment.

Although the announcement of the participating schools will be delayed, Rivera said, the conversion is still scheduled for July 1, 1988.
