She never saw his face. But she fell in love with him anyway, that day when the psychology grad student called the freshman coed’s room asking to speak to someone else.

They talked. And talked. And soon they found themselves flirting on the phone week after week. Actually, it wasn’t his personality she loved as much as it was his voice. “He had the most wonderful voice,” she recalled. “Very deep. Oh, so mature.” He always called late at night, sometimes even at 2 a.m. Sometimes she wondered if this was one of his psychology experiments. “Or how many other girls he called,” she said.

And often she thought about what he looked like. In her mind’s eye, she pictured Tom Selleck “but with a good voice. But maybe he was short, fat and bald, which is probably why he never asked me out on a date. He didn’t want to break the spell.”
