At least two Bangladeshi students were killed and 50 injured in a bomb attack on student demonstrators in the port city of Chittagong. Police officials said a bomb hurled from a building exploded among demonstrators belonging to the Islamic Student Front, an organization of the opposition fundamentalist Jamiat-e-Islami party. The Islamic Student Front in Dhaka blamed the pro-government National Student Society for the attack at the end of a brief general strike. Meanwhile, separatist tribal guerrillas from the outlawed Shanti Bahini (Peace Force) killed at least seven settlers and burned nearly 100 homes in a new campaign in the south, officials said.
