Iran confirmed Sunday that Hadi Khamenei, brother of President Ali Khamenei, was wounded in an attack by guerrillas of the underground Moujahedeen.

The attack took place Wednesday in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, during a march marking the eighth anniversary of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s Islamic revolution.

The Moujahedeen earlier announced that its fighters had used grenades and automatic weapons in the attack on the crowd in downtown Mashhad. Besides Hadi Khamenei, who is a member of the Iranian Parliament, an intelligence officer, a Muslim clergyman and 50 other people were reported wounded.

Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency, monitored in Nicosia, reported the attack Sunday, attributing it to “hypocrites,” a term used by the Tehran government to describe the Moujahedeen.
