The World : S. Africa Policeman Guilty

Share

A South African policeman was found guilty of shooting black youths in the back without provocation, killing one and leaving another with nearly 100 shotgun pellets in his body. Witnesses said the two youths were sitting in Kwandengezi township near Durban last February during anti-apartheid riots. The youths were searched, then were told to run away and were shot in the back by Sgt. John Howard, 23. The judge dismissed murder charges, citing Howard’s assertion that he thought birdshot was not lethal except at close range, and convicted him of culpable homicide and assault.
