Ford Motor Co. said today most of its 164,000 U.S. employees would get profit-sharing checks averaging over $2,100 each in what Ford said was the biggest such pay-out ever by an American company under union contract.

The announcement came a day after Ford, the world’s No. 2 auto maker and the fourth biggest U.S. corporation, reported record global profits of nearly $3.3 billion for 1986. It was the first time since 1924 that Ford out-earned bigger archrival General Motors Corp., whose profits last year declined to $2.95 billion. (Story in Business Section.)
