Applied Data Communications of Tustin reported a loss of $1.7 million for its fiscal 1987 third quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with an $81,000 loss for the comparable period last year. Sales declined to $1.4 million from nearly $1.9 million last year.

The company’s loss for the first nine months was $2.4 million, compared with net earnings a year earlier of $120,000. Revenue of $4.6 million was down 40% from $7.7 million.

The maker of computer equipment blamed the loss on the weakened computer market. The company also wrote off its $670,000 investment in the manufacturing and marketing rights to a machine used to duplicate diskettes.
