MEXICO CITY — Mexico is taking “concrete measures” to combat pollution in the capital, considered one of the most contaminated cities in the world, a government official said.
Secretary of Urban Development and Ecology Victor Manuel Camacho Solis, in his address Tuesday to the yearly congress of the governing Institutional Revolutionary Party, said the government began a cleanup campaign last year.
Camacho said a 21-point plan to reduce the capital city’s pollution level has cut the amount of pollution caused by lead, carbon monoxide, hydrogen dioxide and sulfur, but has been unable to reduce ozone levels in the air.
Environmentalists say Mexico City, with 18 million inhabitants and about 3 million cars, is one of the most polluted cities in the world.
