The World : Iraq to Stop Shelling Cities

Iraq said it will stop shelling Iranian towns and cities for two weeks providing that Iran does not launch any new invasions or attack residential areas. However, the announcement, read over Baghdad radio, exempted military targets, troop concentrations and economic targets from the halt. It said the move followed an appeal to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein by Massoud Rajavi, a Baghdad-based Iranian opposition leader. The announcement came as Iraqi planes struck six Iranian cities. Iraq has launched air raids on cities almost daily since Jan. 9, when Iran launched a cross-border thrust toward the southern Iraqi city of Basra.
