Man Gets New Heart, Dies

PITTSBURGH — A 39-year-old man who had lived for more than a month with a mechanical heart died within hours of receiving a human heart implant, a spokeswoman for Presbyterian-University Hospital said. She said that Wayne Showalter died Tuesday night because an infection, unrelated to the surgery, had spread through his body.
