Dissident Soviet Psychiatrist Freed From Labor Camp
Dissident psychiatrist Anatoly Koryagin, who had accused authorities of putting sane dissidents in psychiatric hospitals, returned to his home in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov today after five years in a labor camp.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Gennady Gerasimov reported his release at a news briefing.
In Amsterdam, the Bukovsky Foundation, which lobbies on behalf of the dissidents, said Koryagin “came walking down the road just when Mrs. Koryagina and friend were on their way to the post office” to telephone the foundation.
Koryagin was accused of anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda after making his report on dissidents and mental hospitals. A group of West European lawmakers nominated the 48-year-old psychiatrist last year for the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize.
