The United Arab Emirates has experienced its first snowfall ever. Residents of the Persian Gulf state usually pray for rain.

“It was the first snowfall in the history of the region,” reported the Emirates’ semiofficial newspaper Al Ittihad.

Residents of Al Ain, about 100 miles east of Abu Dhabi, reported up to 18 inches of snow fell Saturday over a 23-square-mile area near the city.

One excited resident, Shafik Sarkis, told the newspaper, “The snow endured the heat and heavy rainfall that followed for at least four hours before melting.”

“This phenomenon” has attracted many people from the city and the surrounding villages, the paper quoted Sarkis as saying.
