The chief American negotiator in Soviet-U.S. grain trade discussions, Daniel Amstutz, was admitted to George Washington University Hospital today after a collapse, an aide said.

Amstutz, 54, was taken to the emergency room of the hospital after collapsing during a breakfast meeting with congressmen, the spokesman said.

Doctors ordered Amstutz, the Department of Agriculture’s undersecretary for international affairs and commodity programs, to remain in the hospital at least two days for tests. The aide said Amstutz had been working long hours and may have suffered simply a case of fatigue.

Today’s final session of the semiannual grain talks began on schedule with Thomas Kay, administrator of the Agriculture Department’s Agricultural Service, substituting for Amstutz.
