Japan to Accept U.S. Lawyers

WASHINGTON — Japan and the United States have reached an agreement that will make it easier for U.S. lawyers to practice in Japan, U.S. Trade Representative Clayton Yeutter announced today.
The new accord, which follows two years of negotiations, will result in eased restrictions on foreign lawyers beginning on April 1, Yeutter said in a statement. “Japan has been virtually closed to foreign lawyers for over 30 years, and the question of access . . . to Japan’s legal services market has been a major issue for our government since 1982,” he said.
