An Iranian gunboat fired on a Panamanian-registered tanker off the United Arab Emirates in the third attack on ships in the Persian Gulf in two days, maritime salvage executives reported. The 60,000-ton Sea Empress sustained minor damage when an Iranian missile hit it as it headed for Kuwait. Earlier, an Iranian gunboat fired three missiles but missed the Chinese freighter Wu Jiang. At the same time, Iraqi warplanes struck the Iranian tanker Khark 3 and set it afire. The raids ended a seven-week lull in the so-called tanker war, which began three years ago. Iran and Iraq have been at war since September, 1980.
