GROTON, Conn. — The sole survivor of a capsized Philippine freighter reached land Saturday aboard a Navy submarine, which rescued him after 18 of his comrades perished in a raging North Atlantic gale.
Almer Rances, 27, a Filipino crewman aboard the 345-foot Balsa 24, was shaken by the ordeal but was apparently in good condition upon his arrival at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base here, Navy officials said.
The seaman spent a harrowing night on a life raft with six other sailors in 50-foot seas before he was rescued Wednesday by the crew of the Scamp.
