Los Angeles Times Manila correspondent Mark Fineman has been awarded the American Society of Newspaper Editors’ Distinguished Writing Award for his articles about the fall of Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos and the rise to power of Corazon Aquino, the society announced today.

Fineman, a native of Chicago, is one of six American journalists being honored by the society for their work during 1986. He shares deadline-writing or spot news coverage honors with Craig Medred of the Anchorage Daily News, who reported on the 1,100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska.

Winning in the commentary or column category were Dave Barry, humor columnist for the Miami Herald, and Don S. Marsh, of the Charleston Gazette. Jim Nicholson, of the Philadelphia Daily News, was honored for his colorful obituaries of ordinary Philadelphians. Steve Twomey, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, was selected for the best non-deadline entry, an in-depth analysis of U.S. reliance on aircraft supercarriers.

Before joining The Times in January, 1986, to open its Manila bureau, Fineman, 34, was Asia correspondent for the Philadelphia Inquirer, based in New Delhi. He has also worked for the Allentown (Pa.) Call-Chronicle and the Chicago Sun-Times.

Each winner will receive $1,000 at an April 10 banquet during the ASNE’s 1987 convention at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.
