Managua Denounces U.S. Spy Flights and Troop Maneuvers in Honduras

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — The Defense Ministry charged that the United States flew up to 17 spy flights over Nicaragua in February, and it said U.S. troop maneuvers in Honduras are part of escalating aggression against Nicaragua.
The ministry also alleged that Honduras fired on two Sandinista military outposts earlier this week.
Flights originating outside of Nicaragua “carried out exploration and supply operations for the mercenary forces,” according to a ministry statement issued Thursday night.
Managua has said that supply missions for the U.S.-backed contras dropped off after American gunrunner Eugene Hasenfus was shot down over southern Nicaragua on Oct. 5, but since January the flights have increased, the Nicaraguans said.
The ministry charged that the number of U.S. surveillance flights has increased since February.
“U.S. aviation increased its exploration flights over our territory with up to 17 flights by spy planes of the RC-135, U-1, EC-130 and U-2 type,” the statement said.
In addition, Nicaragua complained of continuous military maneuvers by U.S. troops in Honduras.
