CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — Bernhard Langer overcame high winds and rainshowers to shoot a five-under-par 67 and take a two-stroke lead with a 137 total Friday in the $600,000 Honda golf tournament at the Tournament Players Club at Eagle Trace.
“At the start of the day, if I were told I could take a 70, I would have accepted it gladly,” the West German golfer said.
Langer missed only two greens--once with a sand wedge that he flipped into the air in disgust--and bogeyed both holes. He had seven birdies, including a 15-foot putt on his final hole.
Bruce Lietzke was in second place after a second-round 70, while Mark Calcavecchia was third at 141 after a 72.
Masters champion Jack Nicklaus played the front nine in 42, including two double bogeys, and finished with a 77 and a 151 total.
