The World : Filipino Returns Millions

A Philippine businessman charged with enriching himself during the 20-year rule of deposed President Ferdinand E. Marcos has handed over to President Corazon Aquino’s government $3.5 million in cash, officials said. Banana plantation magnate Antonio Floirendo also agreed to turn over $9 million in property, including three Manhattan apartments and estates in Long Island and Hawaii, said Jovito R. Salonga, chairman of the Presidential Commission on Good Government. In exchange, the government will drop criminal and civil charges against Floirendo and return several businesses it sequestered. The government says Marcos and his associates robbed the Philippines of up to $10 billion.
