A major leadership transition in Hungary’s Roman Catholic Church has begun with the appointment of a new primate by Pope John Paul II. Reports from the Vatican said Archbishop Laszlo Paskai, 59, was named archbishop of Estergom, the traditional seat of the head of the Catholic Church in Hungary. He replaces Cardinal Laszlo Lekai, who died last June. The Vatican has also filled vacant positions for bishops in the dioceses of Kalocsa and Vacs.
