The Justice Department has reopened its review of a U.S. attorney’s handling of a case against the late Pennsylvania treasurer, R. Budd Dwyer. A department spokesman, John Russell, said the file was reopened at the request of Rep. Peter W. Rodino Jr. (D-N.J.), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Dwyer shot himself to death at a Jan. 22 news conference, one day before he was to be sentenced for his role in a bribery-conspiracy scheme. The review will be limited to Dwyer’s allegation that acting U.S. Atty. James West abused his prosecutorial discretion by allowing a convicted felon to testify against him.
