The Pakistani government pledged to continue its controversial nuclear research program, even if it means losing $4 billion in U.S. foreign aid. “We shall not be browbeaten nor cajoled,” acting Foreign Minister Zain Noorani told Parliament. The government has repeatedly denied allegations from independent researchers that it is building a nuclear bomb and insists the research program is entirely for energy purposes. Congress is considering a $4.02-billion aid program, which under U.S. law would be halted if Pakistan were to build nuclear weapons.
