“Up From the Dark,” Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin. Rykodisc (AAD). Much of the gently inviting music by this British duo (he’s not the Dave Stewart of Eurythmics) is so cleverly designed, it’s surprising that this album is only available in the United States on compact disc. Stewart, who specializes in drums and synthesizers, and singer Gaskin move from a trace of the lush precision of E.L.O. to (more frequently) the sentimental sweep of Yaz on both original material and some surprising covers (Thomas Dolby and Leslie Gore to Peggy Lee and Motown). Some dry spells, but mostly stylish.
