A judge in Chattanooga, Tenn., denied a request to declare C. H. Butcher Sr. incompetent to stand trial as jury selection began in the bankruptcy fraud case against three generations of his once-powerful banking family. The 84-year-old patriarch; his son, C. H. Butcher Jr., 48; grandson, C. H. Butcher III, 26, and five others face charges in a 69-count indictment in an alleged attempt to hide millions of dollars in assets of C. H. Butcher Jr. and his wife from creditors.
