Reagan’s Speech on Iran-Contra Issue

Share

President Reagan, confronted with sadistic terrorism, the Soviet Union in Afghanistan threatening Iran’s door, and the sadness, futility, and desperation of hostages, was given a glimmer of hope in a risky undertaking. The entire nation looked to him for a solution, so he chanced dealing with the Iranians with the possibility some good might result. Secrecy was a key ingredient, and when Syria disclosed the operation the total effort failed, probably more because of the actions of our media than the revelation itself in a Mideast magazine.

You think the President made a mistake. Almost anything a President does is considered a mistake by someone. A mistake is not grounds for impeachment. This country doesn’t need this brand of hate-mongering.

Personally, I’m proud of the President for trying. I can’t see that this foreign policy decision was all that big a deal. It became one because a vocal, destructive opposition determined to make it one.
