Paul Zuber; Fought School Segregation

Paul Zuber, who fought to desegregate several Northern school systems in the 1960s, has died of a heart attack at age 60.

Zuber--a lawyer who once ran for President in an effort to call attention to the plight of blacks in the country--attained national prominence in 1961, when he won a federal court decision, later affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court, that the New Rochelle (N.Y.) Board of Education had deliberately created and maintained a segregated school. The court found that the Lincoln School was kept entirely black by the gerrymandering of district lines.

Zuber, who died Friday at his home here, also battled educational barriers and discrimination in New York City; Chicago; Englewood, N.J., and other communities.
