A Taiwanese squid boat sank after colliding with a Japanese trawler Wednesday, but all 16 crew members were rescued, maritime officials said.

Search and rescue coordinator Capt. Philip Whitley said the Ho Chun No. 2 sank in about 260 feet of water six hours after the 4:30 a.m. collision.

The sunken vessel’s position was nearly 14 miles east of Palmeston on New Zealand’s South Island. Whitley said the Japanese ship, Kaiyo Maru No. 35, picked up the Taiwanese crew and was steaming toward Wellington.
